Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes at CSM
June 4, 2011

After 72 years on Charing Cross Road, Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design moves to King Cross. John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton, Christopher Kane and Katharine Hamnett are just some of the famous alumni to have studied in the legendary building, while the Sex Pistols played their first ever gig there. To mark the switch from one golden era to the dawn of a new age in fashion education, the ever-so-talented people at CSM made a tribute black and white film containing precious archive footage of CSM over the decades, with particular emphasis on the 60’s and 70′, that they debuted at the BA fashion show earlier this week.
With a little help from her musician friends Katie Grand, Love editor in chief, stylist and ex-St Martins student, might be planning a last party at the building, and VV looks at some of its archive pictures taken during our courses there.
God save McQueen and the British Empire
May 3, 2011

When an apprentice with tailors on Saville Row, Lee Alexander McQueen infamously sewed the words “I am a cu*nt” into the lining of a jacket he tailored for Prince Charles. Tweny years since then, Lee studied at Saint Martins, won four times the title of “British Designer of the Year” and received a CBE, given to him by the Queen. To his mother, McQueen described that he locked eyes with the Queen and “it was like falling in love”.
The choice of the designer for the wedding dress of the now Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine Middleton was, more than an aknowlegment, a homage to the late Alexander McQueen and to Sarah Burton, who since the death of the designer in February last year is the creative director of the house that still brings tradition and fantasy to fashion, only substituting rebellion for romanticism.
Alexander McQueen’s passion found expression in fashion, and was once again reverenced. This time, in the bride’s dress.
14 years within

“The creation of modern, beautifully crafted clothes was at the heart of Lee’s vision. I intend to stay true to his legacy,” said in a statement Sarah Burton, McQueen’s right hand for 14 years and new Creative Director of the brand, in September last year.
Spring Summer 2011, Burton’s first official collection for Alexander McQueen was a fitting tribute, and a triumph. A promising beginning, indeed.
