An Album to Record Thoughts, Feelings, etc.”

YSL: L’Amour Fou

May 14, 2011

L’Amour Fou is a film about the relationship between Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, longtime lover and business partner of the designer. It was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival this spring and opened in the United States on Friday.

It mentions Saint Laurent creations, shows footage of the couple’s fairytale houses in Paris, Marrakech, and the Chateau Gabriel in Normandy, but centers on the 2009 Christie’s mega-auction following Saint Laurent’s death of more than 700 art objects that Mr. Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent, who first met in Paris in 1957, amassed during their years as a couple.

“The sale of the century” comprised works by Monet, Picasso and Matisse, art deco furniture and Roman antiquities. It netted an astounding $484 million (divided between the Yves Saint Laurent Foundation and AIDS charities) and Mr. Bergé said of the auction: “It was very violent. An armchair for 80, 90 million. Very violent. It was an exorcism.”

Showing everything from the cataloging and crating of the objects in the couple’s sumptuous Rue de Babylone apartment to the pounding of the auctioneer’s hammer, the film was directed by Pierre Thoretton, who was once married to the daughter of Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve, a Saint Laurent muse, close friend and loyal customer.

As the movie suggests, it was a poignant monument to Bergé and Saint Laurent’s shared life. “The collection is a reflection of the integration of their taste,” says Thoretton. “It was the growth of their vision of beauty and aesthetic in the world.”

VV thinks that, with L’Amour Fou, people will be enticed by a crazy love for the art, the creator of the smoking, the safari jacket and ready-to-wear with the revolutionary Rive Gauche collection in 1966, and by the the encreasingly hard to get YSL vintage pieces. Voilà!

And Yves Saint Laurent also answered a version of The Proust Questionnaire!
